Inking the Comic Pt 2 - Oral exams are next week. I will work on that preparation tomorrow and the weekend when I find the time. I am a bit worried that I won’t be confident enough to sell the project (not literally selling it). I don’t want to ramble on when I present. I’m not worried about having enough to show. I’m worried that I’ll show too much and bore the examiners. I tend to ramble if you can’t already tell. I want to teach people that comics take time. I want to show them the amount of planning a comic takes. I also want to show them the work it takes to adapt a story and what adaptions are. I also hope to teach the examiners something new about the world of storytelling and entertainment/art. I also hope that I won’t get looked at funny. The inking/coloring stage is flying by quickly. I got three pages done so far, and I’m currently working on the fourth. I find it fun to play with grayscale and color. I think the glitch effects are my favorite part. The lettering stage has been easy this time around. The first three pages took a bit to get right, but the lettering has been a breeze for the rest. A bit too easy… (Fear sinks in) I probably did something wrong. I hope not. I should finish the comic next week. The comic is shorter than planned, but the full episode is on Youtube, and the story has no sign of stopping anytime soon. The Darkness has returned and now hides in plain sight. And the only one(s) who knows something is up, and has information on the history (to an extent), and can/wants to stop them, is dead (they are also alive, it’s complicated)… And is in a different location, far from the unhatched danger. One of the characters is being toyed with, lied to, and manipulated, and they don’t even know it. Will the characters be reunited? Yes. Will that reunion be heartfelt? God no! The character being manipulated is slowly growing resentment for the other one who’s far away. Why? Because since they left, the location has been peaceful. Too peaceful. They like the peace so much that they are starting to wonder if everything will run smoothly without the other character around. False peace is deadly. What will happen next? No clue. I have finished two pages today. After some trial and error, I found the right gray tones for shading. I’m still playing around with the tones, however. I like the little splash of color that I added to the words. It gives the page some contrast with the gray tones (I hope that’s the right term, I haven’t studied art terms in a while, I apologize to all artists for my failures). I did struggle with the first panel. The mall’s logo was hard to get right. I played around with the lettering for a while until I landed on this. The building was also giving me trouble. So, what did I learn from this? I need to work on my buildings a bit more. I know how to draw trees, I got clouds, I got people, I got the inside of a building down, just not the outside of it. Why am I like this? I combined the ink and color stages to speed up the process. The comic will be done in grayscale, with a dash of color in some areas. It’s faster, and time is fleeting… And I just remembered that I can’t work on the comic over the weekend because I need to work on diplomas and my oral exam prep… I love comics, but why did I give myself too much on my plate. Now, I’ve never rebelled in my life. I never hit my teenage rebellious faze, and I don’t think I ever will. I feel a pit form in my stomach when I come close to breaking a small rule in any situation. Well, little Tim-Tim, (or whatever you’d prefer) my birthday is over April Break. And I was planning on working on the project over that time. I had my birthday to celebrate, so I had to dedicate a day to that. But, that wasn’t the only thing I had to do. As a senior, I have extra responsibilities, and those extra responsibilities are Roundtable prep. Roundtables, for those who don’t know, are a big every other year thing our school does to showcase our growth as students. They basically showcase a portfolio you’ve put together, along with some realm letters to go along with them. 8th and 10th-grade are the small Roundtables to prepare you for the biggest Roundtable of your high school carrier, the 12th-grade Roundtable. They are a graded thing, so you either pass or pass with conditions. If you pass with conditions, you have to alter and edit your work again. And, in some rare cases, you have to redo your entire Roundtable and re-present it. I almost had to redo my 10th-grade Roundtable because I created a 12th-grade Roundtable by accident. I didn’t know how close I was to redo my Roundtable until my mom told me on the car ride home. I put too much work into my Roundtable last time, what else is new? I put too much effort into my work all the time. When I feel passionate about something, I give it my all. But, because of that one Roundtable, I’m traumatized. I don’t want to overdo or put too little in my work. So, I came up with a plan. I would work on my Roundtable after my Senior Project was finished. That way, I can dedicate my time to it fully. I was going to dedicate April Brake to celebrate my birthday and work on my project. Roundtable stuff came up in an email. So, I basically had to work on it during Break. It took me three days, but I got to a good stopping point so my teachers won’t worry about me. The vary next day (the day after I got the email), a package was delivered to me. Diplomas. For the past five years, I’ve been in this extracurricular class called, Diploma Art. A group of kids who like to draw work together to create personalized, homemade, stylized diplomas for that year's graduating class. You either use colored pencil, watercolor, or watercolored pencil to draw on the diplomas. I’m not proficient in that medium, but I’ve been using it anyway because I didn’t have access to my preferred medium. You gather information on the person you're drawing a diploma for, while still keeping it a secret. Sometimes, the teacher running the class will guess what the student would like on their diploma if they never come forward. Which happened frequently. I’m one of those students that never came forward because I have a *theory of what they will make for me, and I want to see if that theory is accurate. I also forgot to come forward, so… *My theory is, is that they will draw art supplies, comic sound effects, and maybe something anime-related on my diploma. When in reality, I would like a crystal cave, and baby dragons all done in a pastel color pallet. There are more components, but those are the big ones for me. I love being invested in a story. I like talking about stories with friends and family. When characters are flawed and complicated, I find them more memorable. Characters nowadays move the story forward. The plot can be the main force of movement in a story, but characters are what make a plot more memorable. A plot structure is the bare bones of a story, while the setting, characters, and many little things that aren’t the main plot that gives the story flesh and life. Making the plot unique. How many stories tell the tale of a chosen one saving the world? Or about a kid moving to a new town and starting school? Or a character has amnesia and is in search of finding who they are or were? A lot of stories do. And each writer does something to that plot point to make it more interesting/diffrent from anything else. I want to accurately draw specific backgrounds, character placement, or visual choices, just so I can stay consistent with past pages and the original source material. Besides the prologue, I’ve been drawing out all the pages in pencil so they are all outlined and ready for inking. I do this so that the comic feels like there is some sort of progression (close to completion). Sitting down and focusing on the project is hard to do, especially if you’re in school and have a social life; so, getting pages done can feel like a hassle. A story can feel too big, or the plot may take too long to get to the exciting parts, or you don’t see an ending for the story; those feelings can cause burnout for cartoonists. I like to add detail to my backgrounds and characters as I draw in this stage, so I don’t have to plan anything in the ink stage. The lines are all right there. In this stage, I usually add a rough outline for speech bubbles. But I didn’t do that for this comic; because I made that outline a while back. For this page, I wanted to do a little foreshadowing. I focused on certain scenes and characters that felt relevant to the show. I asked questions like: What scenes, from a plot perspective, felt important? what characters played major roles? What items had an impact on the plot? and how could they impact the story in the future? Since the story is an amnesia plot. I wanted the page to feel like we were seeing a story in flashes, glimpses. But, there were pieces missing from that story. I wanted the reader to wonder what they were seeing. I wanted enough confusion so that the reader can decipher what they were seeing, but not know how they fit. It’s also the most complicated and time-consuming step. I thought about the themes of the story this page portrays, what elements were relevant to the plot and how color can bolden those topics. Since the memory scenes are shown in gray tones in later episodes, I wanted to stay in the realm of those tones. I also thought about the original source material the story is based on, and how the antagonist is often depicted in purple. Gray and purple became the primary colors I used. Green is also an important color for two of the objects in the show. So, I used bright greens to liven the page a bit, so the darker scenes can have an easy contrast. I wanted the page to be both alive and dead since both source materials focus on that theme. I wanted to embody an otherworldly feeling, as well as a techy atmosphere only found in computers. I wanted the focal point to be the bright green device as its energy flows outward. The End of an Era - As you can imagine, this lie effect made it annoying to draw with, and every tool had this effect. I’ve never seen this effect before, but as we researched the issue, we found that other artists have encountered this and made videos on the topic to help others overcome this issue. What they all said, however, was that you have to go to the pen settings and play around with the pen pressure. I did that, but that didn’t work. I contacted Clip Studio Tech Support to help me fix the issue. But, they didn’t give me any new information that my parents hadn’t already found. My mom and dad recommended that I contact my CCS friends and my mentor to help me figure this out. My art friends told me that the problem could either be the program itself, or the Wacom tablet and pen. So, to combat this, I had to re-download both programs, unplug the device, and restart my computer. Some of the tips are round, some aren’t, it’s not consistent. I tried unplugging, reloading the pen, resetting the pen pressure, restarting my computer, digging deep into the program to reload it, but nothing worked. I got both of my parents involved, but nothing got fixed. At first, we thought it was the tablet, but I unplugged the new tablet and replugged the old, and the same thing happened. This leads me to conclude that it’s not the tablet, but possibly the program. I’ve contacted the company that runs Clip Studio Paint last Friday for assistance. She gave it to me so I can use it for college next year. My other computer was old and dying, but I liked it. It rarely gave me program troubles. Files were hard to find, but I could navigate just fine. I was nervous to switch computers because I would have to download everything. But I eventually made the switch and redownloaded Clip Studio Paint; when I did, I noticed something was off about the drawing tools. They all seemed to be the same, no new features were added. But they felt off. They felt too smooth like I was drawing with a mouse. And the tool seemed to leave behind a tail, long after I lifted the pen. This was before I got a new tablet. I just figured that the program was just getting used to the computer, so I left it alone for a while. When I got the new tablet and started drawing again, the line effect wouldn’t go away. They are basically rough drafts. They help to layout a page for both panels, speech-bubbles, sense of tone, action, etc. If your struggling with a page, just get some scrap paper and make a panel, and split it in two. Each side of the divided panel acts as a separate page in an open book. It helps you understand the flow of your story, look, and tone without too much detail. It’ll serve as your blueprint so you aren’t going in blind. Writing a script can help you understand the story before you even draw it. The script gives you a sense of how many speech-bubbles, panels, and actions you’ll need to draw. The script I’ve been writing has been very helpful to me when creating my thumbnails. However, the script and thumbnails don’t need to be copied to a T, you will make changes as you go. Not everything in the script will go on paper, and the format of the thumbnails may change while drawing. And that’s completely fine. Heavily detailed characters can work, but know that you don’t have to go all out on it. Make Sure You Can Draw Them Again: When working in animation or comics, you want to make sure that your characters are relatively easy to draw, not too much detail helps, keep them simple and identifiable. Personality: While designing a character, it’s important to think of their personality. What do they like? What do they hate? How would they act if they were put in a certain situation? How can you portray the personality of a character without dialogue? What do their clothes, hair, and color palette say about this character? It helps in making the character identifiable. I didn’t design these characters, but I still needed to draw them. When adapting, I needed to figure out what details I needed and which ones I didn’t. I didn’t count every single strand of hair drawn on a specific character, not entirely. I did that for the bangs, but I left the rest to interpretation. I don’t draw animals often, and I rarely draw robots. FNAF characters are predominantly anthropomorphic robots, and they have a specific feel to them. They're from a horror game, so their support to be unsettling. I rarely draw horror, so mix that in with robots and animals you get new territory to tread. They are also existing characters, so I’m not making anything up. Near or far, if you can tell two characters apart by just their shadows or silhouettes alone, you’ve done a good job. A good example of this Micky Mouse. This character on the right has an interesting side silhouette because of his open faceplate. Color Scheme: You also want characters to differ in color variants as well. It’s best to keep color schemes simple and to follow a specific color pallet. Colors can have various meanings and can define a character, red can emphasize anger, fire, or heroics. Color Theory also plays a vital role in color scheming, you don’t want to just throw random colors together. If you change the colors to grayscale via a filter, and you can still understand the image, you’ve done a good job (I learned this tip a few days ago, but I can’t find the source). Place of Rest and Face: When coloring in a character, it’s important to think about where you want your viewer’s eyes to rest. Using a dark color helps, but you need to think about where. It makes the page layout easier to follow and less daunting, and it helps find a flow for both dialogue and imagery so your not making stuff up when you start drawing the comic. Don’t be afraid to make edits/cuts.
